New Association Director
Paul BrownAloha!
I'm excited to be on board as the new Association Director of Kapalua Resort Association.  I'd like to introduce myself and tell you a little about my career, my family and my goals for this new position.

I am blessed to have been a resident of Maui for 18 years.  I arrived here in July of 1991 for a three-week contracting job on the Royal Lahaina Resort tennis courts in Ka'anapali and knew the moment I arrived that I would never leave.  I can still remember working on the courts and watching one rainbow after another cascade down the West Maui mountains.  I sold my contracting business in Southern California and made the move to Maui.  Soon after, I joined the team at Compadres Mexican Restaurant and fell in love with the hospitality business.  This part-time job turned into a career in restaurant management, including time at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort, Hard Rock Cafe © and Kapalua's own Plantation House Restaurant.

As any of you who know me are aware, my family is my life.  Kimberly and I met in 2001; within two weeks of our first date we were inseparable and within a month of dating, we had put our names on the waiting list for a home lot in the Kahana Wai community and started planning a life together.  The years since have been a whirlwind of events, including our wedding in 2002, building two homes, career advancements for both of us and the birth of our two beautiful children, Aiden and Lauren (who plan on being the official touring professionals for Kapalua Golf on the PGA and LPGA tours).

I am thrilled to again be working in Kapalua Resort, especially since it will be working directly with you, the residents and members of the Kapalua community.  I recognize that Kapalua is unique not only to Maui but to the world, and while there have been recent economic challenges, this community will continue to grow and improve.

My initial few months as Association Director will involve a tremendous amount of listening and observing as there are so many facets to the position.  I will be spending a great deal of time working directly with the departments within the Association to learn their operations and see how they can better serve the community.  I will be reaching out to you as community members for your input and advice with regularly scheduled opportunities to meet and discuss issues.  You'll also see me out on the street, walking and biking the sidewalks, trails and common areas with you, taking note of areas in which we could improve.

Over the years, many visiting friends and family have, upon observing my connection to the community and people of West Maui, called me the "Mayor of Lahaina."  Our website describes Kapalua as being similar to a small town and I see my role as something of a behind the scenes "Mayor of Kapalua" - someone who works tirelessly to ensure the needs of the community are met.

I look forward to working with you all as we continue to enhance the beauty and sense of place in our "town" of Kapalua,

Paul D. Brown

Fleming Beach Park Named America's Top Beach!
Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, commonly known as Dr. Beach annually rates the top beaches in the nation. This year, he bestowed the honor of TOP BEACH to Fleming Beach Park in the Kapalua Resort. Considering that Kapalua Beach was named the top beach in 1991, the Kapalua Resort has received this prestigious award twice now.  Once a beach is named the national winner, it is excluded from the competition in following years. With two of our three crown jewels having won top honors, is Oneloa next?

Aloha and welcome to the new Kapalua Resort Association Website!

Since this website for the Kapalua Resort Association members is new, it’s important to know that it’s YOUR website. It is our hope that you find it interesting, informative and perhaps a bit fun. Without a doubt, the Kapalua Resort is a special place. Indeed, this wonderful resort offers something special at every winding turn in the road; or gentle step to the beach; or panoramic view to the mountain. We’re blessed with an abundance of natural resources and exceptional views and vistas. But, more importantly, we’re a collection of varied individuals and entities that we call the KRA.

What exactly is the Kapalua Resort Association? In a nutshell, it’s the master resort community association that includes you. The 1650 acre, master-planned resort is home to ten exclusive residential communities comprised of stunning, single family homes, dramatic homesites and premier condominium villas. Each individual owner of property in the Kapalua Resort is a member of KRA. Additionally, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, the Maui Land & Pineapple Company, as well as some commercial entities are also members of KRA. But, the focus of this newsletter is clearly centered on you, the individual member.

In the past, there has been some confusion as to exactly what the KRA does for the membership. After all, what, you may ask, are the benefits of being a member of the KRA? Condensed to its simplest duties, the KRA is tasked with the responsibility of maintaining and protecting the common elements. Additionally, with permission from our founding documents, the board of directors also contracts for security and shuttle services. Naturally, there are other duties as well; from strategic planning to caretaking financial matters of the association. But clearly, although the duties for the association include much more than previously mentioned, we are also mindful of the fact that we are a community. Some might even say that one of our most important duties is to build and maintain a community with a sense of place.

With that charge in mind, please feel free pass along any suggestions you may have with your website. As always, we’re just an email away.

The Kapalua Resort is one of the leading residential resort communities in the nation: if not the world. The great climate, topography, meticulous long-term planning, award winning beaches, fantastic amenities, and its effective Community Association all contribute to this belief. We welcome your interest and participation in the Kapalua Resort Association.
